ALBERT PEGUERO

ABOUT

Albert Peguero (b.1998) is a South Bronx based, Multi-media Sculptor. A first-generation college graduate, Albert obtained his BFA in Sculpture at Purchase College, SUNY in 2020. Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New York City, Albert’s work tackles conversations around the shared experiences of working-class immigrants in the United States from a queer immigrants perspective. Peguero's work strives to make those in positions of privilege think more intensely about their position within given hierarchies.

Peguero's Ongoing projects include, Mi Techo Es Mi Derecho or “My Roof Is My Right”. Inspired by artists such as Tania Bruguera and her work with Immigrant Movement International. Mi Techo Es Mi Derecho aims to bring communities in the Dominican Republic together through shared existences and social activism. Recent achievements include the Outstanding Senior Award for Sculpture at Purchase College, where he participated in the Artist-in-Residence Windgate Fellowship program, and in the Liberty Science Museum’s first Artist-in-Residence program as a member of the Border Crossers Series Team, where he worked alongside artists such as Chico Macmurtrie.

In 2019 Albert curated his first exhibition, Perico Ripiao, at Purchase College, focusing on a multidisciplinary array of artists of Dominican and Haitian descent. This current year Peguero's video work "A Través de la Persiana (Through the Blinds)" is featured alongside Damien Davis and Times Square Arts, at 8 Times Square on Broadway. A digital artwork that celebrates rural, Afro-Latinx, and queer identities. Fusing shapes and colors reminiscent of Caribbean architectural embellishments with a nod to the old peep shows of Midtown Manhattan, the work offers animated glimpses into windows revealing a cast of cross-cultural silhouettes and symbolism.
